The newest member of our German contingent, Sjoeke Nusken, recalls her first steps onto a football pitch, the value of a support network, and the hidden talents from her childhood.

From Frankfurt to the Fulham Road, Nusken made the switch from the Frauen-Bundesliga to the Women’s Super League this summer.

Her first taste of football in a Chelsea shirt came during our pre-season victory over Roma at Kingsmeadow.

Having entered the fray from the bench at half-time against the Italian champions, Nusken immediately caught the eye with her display

Then, on Sunday, the 22-year-old firmly stamped her mark on the Blues side with a superbly-taken hat-trick against Brighton.

Sport runs in the family for Nusken, who was inspired to take up football by her sister. The German international detailed the start of her footballing journey, taking us back to when today’s reality was merely a pipe dream.

‘I started playing football when I was seven years old,' she tells us.

'My big sister played football and I wanted to do the same. My first team was with boys, my second team was also with boys, I played with the boys until I was 19 years old. From there, I joined Eintracht Frankfurt where I played before I came to Chelsea.’

Throughout her development, Nusken showcased the versatility in her game, with goalkeeping one of the few roles she hasn’t experienced.

She experimented with several attacking positions before settling into the central midfield role that has made her the player she is today.

‘I played in different positions, like an all-rounder maybe! I played in the striker position, the No.10, as a winger and at centre-back. The only position I haven’t played is goalkeeper, but maybe in the future!’

Our new recruit highlighted one of her earliest influences in the game, while with a sizeable family who have an affinity with sport, Nusken has always had their backing.

‘My first coach supported me a lot. He picked me up and took me to training. My parents were very busy with four children at home!

'My family have been a big support, they have come to London to help me settle in and it’s very helpful that they are on my side!’

Away from football, Nusken talked about her family’s involvement in sport which has been a huge influence.

She revealed a hidden talent from her childhood which could have seen her career move in a different direction.

‘My sister who was playing football is now playing volleyball. My other sister is also playing volleyball and she does gymnastics, but the oldest one doesn’t do any sport!

'I like to play tennis. I played professionally when I was younger. I played the German Championship and won when I was Under-10 and Under-11.’
