Enzo Maresca has explained just what it is that makes Marc Cucurella such a nightmare to play against.

The left-back was outstanding midweek against Barcelona and more specifically his compatriot Lamine Yamal.

Indeed, Cucurella continues to set the standard against the world’s best attackers, with PSG’s Desire Doue and Ousmane Dembele, and Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, among those to come a cropper when facing the Spaniard in recent months.

He will have another big test on Sunday when Bukayo Saka lines up on Arsenal’s right-hand side, but there is no reason to believe Cucurella won’t win that battle too. Ahead of the game, Maresca analysed his defender’s primary ability.

‘It is the focus and attention he has for 95 minutes,’ said the head coach.

‘For defenders you can be good for 94 minutes and then you can drop the attention for one minute and concede something.

‘The good thing about Marc is that for 95 minutes he is always focused – apart from Tottenham away [last season] when we conceded two goals in two minutes because of him!’ joked Maresca, who added: ‘Overall Marc has always been top, and he is always thinking how he can defend better.’

It is not only on the pitch that Cucurella makes such an impact. Many players have stated what a big personality he is in the dressing room, lifting spirits with his jovial behaviour and fantastic sense of humour.

Maresca noted how impressive it is he can fulfil both duties while at Cobham.

‘He is the biggest joker, for sure, one of the characters inside the building, and he has the capacity to switch from laughing and joking to being serious.

‘I want all the players to have that mentality. The more players you have like Marc, the better it is.’
