Pedro is close to completing his fifth season at Stamford Bridge and the Spaniard is the next subject of our feature looking at how 2019/20 was going for each of our players before the campaign was suspended.

The 32-year-old signed from Barcelona in the summer of 2015 and has been a useful source of experience as well as quality for Frank Lampard this term…

Pedro: 18 appearances (five as a sub), two goals, three assists

‘He has something that he can contribute with his experience and his ability to break lines and run behind people, maybe get those goals in and around the box. Players look up to him for what he has done. To look sharp, to be giving advice and giving the place a lift with his body language. He can be one of our most important players until the end of the season. He is an infectious player.’

Pedro was hailed by Lampard in the aftermath of our FA Cup win against Liverpool in early March as somebody who could play a key part in the remainder of the season and those prophetic words rang true later that same week as the forward scored his first Premier League goal in over a year against Everton.

It was his second appearance on the scoresheet this season following a converted penalty against Grimsby Town in the League Cup in September, a game in which he also captained Chelsea for the first time.

Stunning in Salzburg

Even before the competitive season had started, Pedro's penchant for a technically masterful goal came to the fore as we faced RB Salzburg in Austria in the penultimate game of our pre-season campaign.

His was one of eight goals in the contest as the Blues ran out 5-3 winners but there is no doubting it was the pick of the bunch, described in our match report as 'a goal to make you gasp. His volleyed back-flick from Barkley's cross was pure genius and will take some beating in 2019/20.'

It is questionable whether there has been a better goal scored all season and it proved a timely reminder of his enduring quality and ability to surprise in the final third.

Promising start curtailed

Pedro’s season started positively under the new boss as he featured in every minute of our opening three matches before a hamstring injury in the warm-up at Carrow Road proved the start of a troubling few months with injuries.

Issues with his calf and Achilles followed as he struggled to recover full fitness and it was not until the New Year that he completed 90 minutes again.

However, his unparalleled track record as a serial winner has been an important characteristic among the squad for Lampard even when he has not been playing, particularly with the transition this term towards a younger squad built around emerging homegrown talent.

Cup opportunities

The domestic cup competitions have provided a useful platform for Pedro to regain form and fitness this campaign, with the Spaniard involved in all five of our outings so far. He was one of the standout performers when we thumped Grimsby in September, involved in two of our seven goals and generally setting the standard for a fairly young side.

It is not just against lower-league opposition that Pedro has thrived, as his impressive display against Liverpool in the penultimate game before the season was suspended proved. While Billy Gilmour’s standout performance in midfield captured most of the post-match punditry and headlines, Pedro was particularly damaging to the Reds’ backline with runs in behind and an incessant pressing from the front.

If he can pick up where he left off when the season resumes later this month, he could yet have a significant part to play in the remainder of our campaign.
