Fikayo Tomori, who scored what ultimately proved to be the winning goal in the FA Cup fourth-round tie at Hull, confirmed afterwards that winning this competition is a major ambition for him and his team-mates.

After a relatively comfortable first-half on Humberside during which Michy Batshuayi had given the Blues the lead, Hull upped their game in the second half and tested our resolve before Tomori headed in to make it 2-0. The home side, for whom played for a year on loan, later pulled one back and ended the game pushing for the equaliser but the 22-year-old defender and his colleague held on for the 2-1 win.‘We were expecting Hull to come on to us,’ says Tomori about being called on to do plenty of defending in the second half. ‘Playing a Championship side in their home in the FA Cup, they have nothing to lose really. We dealt with it pretty well and my goal came at a good time because it knocked a bit of the wind out of their sails. Their free-kick going in gave them another kind of energy so we are happy to get the win and credit to Hull as well because they played well.‘It would mean a lot [to have a good FA Cup run],’ he added. ‘A lot of us are in our first full season in the Premier League and playing for Chelsea as well and it would be a big thing.‘Chelsea have got such a great history in this competition, and the manager has as well, so it would be nice to win the trophy as for many of us it would be our first one. We are just taking it round by round. We have a lot of games coming up and we want to win as many as we can and hopefully we can have a trophy at the end of it.’

Not for the first time recently, there was an over-riding feeling that the Chelsea performance did not serve up the goals the approach play merited, and Tomori confirmed the players feel this way as well.‘We could have been probably three or four up at half-time so to not take those chances was pretty disappointing. We made it a lot more difficult for ourselves than it should be. So it is something for us to learn from and something for us to work on and the last few weeks it is what has happened where we haven’t taken our chances and we haven’t picked up as many points as we should have.‘It was nice to get the win against Hull and I am happy to get the goal and happy to be in the next round but we still know we have to improve.’
