Renowned Canadian pianist and composer Tony Ann visited Stamford Bridge for the first time earlier this month to perform a special rendition of Blue is the Colour ahead of our Premier League game against Manchester United.

The 32-year-old, who has performed globally, produced a special one-off piece combining his single Rush of Life, released earlier this year, with our famous match-day anthem originally recorded ahead of the 1972 League Cup final.

And after his performance across Stamford Bridge, we spoke to Tony about his first Chelsea visit and what he expected from his maiden Premier League experience.

Tony, you've performed at some incredible locations in recent years. Have you ever performed anywhere like Stamford Bridge?

‘No, this is a first. It's truly amazing. This stadium has been around since 1905, and that makes it even more special. That I got to perform on the pitch is very cool, really special.’

What are your favourite locations that you have previously filmed at?

‘I did a video at the Eiffel Tower, which was really cool. And the Great Wall of China and the CN Tower in Toronto, my hometown. That was also very special. But this is also very special, definitely in the top three places I’ve performed.'

What did you enjoy most about performing at Stamford Bridge?

‘Playing the club song, because I know how special that is. It's a funny story, I was in Prague, and my promoter recognised the song. So, the song is popular everywhere, I guess. For me, playing that song here on the pitch with all the blue seats was great.’

What was your favourite location within Stamford Bridge that you played?

‘Probably the dressing room. Seeing where the players prepare, where they talk at half time and celebrate after the game, that was my favourite, for sure.

You're going to be watching our game against Manchester United. What are you expecting from the experience?

‘Yeah. I'm very excited. I know English fans are very energetic and into the game, so I'm excited to witness that live for the first time.’

Will you be joining in on the chants?

‘Yeah, I mean, I know the song now! I know the lyrics. I've been playing it over and over, so I will.’

You are used to performing at intimate and quiet venues. What did you need to factor in when performing inside a venue like this?

‘Well, I made the cover of Blue is the Colour more energetic, and I tried to kind of add my spin to it. But for me, I just wanted to stay true to the melody and the core essence of the song. I just try to keep the energy up for the anthem.'

Can we expect you back at Stamford Bridge sometime soon?

‘I hope so. I would love to be back. This place is very special. It's my first time coming to a stadium that has this kind of charm to it. I feel it's more special than the newer stadiums. The newer stadiums are really nice as well, but you can really feel the history, which is very unique. It’s special.’
