Chelsea’s 3-2 win over Newcastle United on Monday extended our excellent home record in the Premier League against the Magpies.

It’s a journey of nearly 300 miles (500 kilometres) from south-west London to Newcastle upon Tyne and Magpies fans haven’t had too much to smile about on their long trip home in recent years with their team not managing an away win against the Blues in 13 visits.

Since a Papiss Cisse double secured a 2-0 win in May 2012, the Toon Army have struggled at Stamford Bridge with Chelsea recording 10 wins and a draw in our last 11 league meetings.

We also beat them 3-0 in the fourth round of the FA Cup in January 2018 en route to lifting the trophy and triumphed in a penalty shoot-out in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals earlier this season after Mykhailo Mudryk netted a stoppage-time equaliser.

The result in 2012 remains our only Premier League home loss to Newcastle who have been beaten in 21 of 29 league matches at the Bridge since Mark Stein’s lone goal secured a 1-0 win for Glenn Hoddle’s side in December 1993.

While many of our early Premier League meetings in the capital were tight affairs which often ended in narrow 1-0 wins for the hosts or 1-1 draws, the Blues began to stamp our authority on the fixture after the turn of the millennium as we hammered the Magpies 3-0 in September 2002 and November 2005, 5-0 in November 2003 and 4-0 in December 2004.

A goalless stalemate in November 2008 and 2-2 draw in May 2011 preceded Newcastle’s lone Premier League victory at the Bridge but we went on to win the next nine fixtures, beginning in August 2012 when Eden Hazard bagged the first of his 110 Chelsea goals in a 2-0 victory.

The Belgian maestro seemed to enjoy our home matches against the Magpies as he netted six goals in the fixture including a hat-trick in a 3-0 success in February 2014 and a brace in a 3-1 victory in December 2017.

Our run of victories against Newcastle, which also featured a 5-1 demolition in February 2016 highlighted by a Pedro brace and a dramatic 1-0 win two years ago thanks to a late Kai Havertz strike, came to an end when we were held to a 1-1 draw in our final match of last season.

However, this week’s victory by Mauricio Pochettino’s young side returned us to winning ways in the fixture and continued our excellent recent home record against the Premier League’s most northern side.
