It was on this day in 1997 that a Norwegian striker by the name of Tore Andre Flo made the move to Stamford Bridge to bolster Ruud Gullit’s attacking options. Thus began the start of a wonderful Blues career.
A relative unknown in England, Flo had just turned 24 when he swapped Brann in his homeland for FA Cup winners Chelsea.
Flo netted on his debut at Coventry and finished his first season with a commendable 15 goals in all competitions, including an iconic hat-trick at White Hart Lane, and a quickfire brace away to Real Betis during our triumphant Cup Winners’ Cup campaign.
Flo followed that up with 13 goals in 1998/99, and he went on to even greater heights the next season. It was a momentous campaign as we competed in the Champions League for the first time. Flo found the competition to his liking, notching five goals en route to the quarter-finals.
It was there, in the first leg against Barcelona, that Flo says he enjoyed his greatest moment in a Chelsea shirt. Who are we to argue! He takes up the story.
‘This was the first season Chelsea were in the Champions League, so we were all very excited to see how we would do,’ recalled Flo.
‘We were in the quarter-final and we were playing against probably what we thought was the best club team in the world at that time.
‘The atmosphere at Stamford Bridge was electric. In the first half we played some very, very good football and we were 3-0 up at half-time.’
A trademark Gianfranco Zola free-kick was followed by two typically composed Flo finishes.
‘My first goal was one of those where I got the ball from Zola. It was not too difficult a goal, I steered it with the inside of my foot into the goal. It was great work from him [Zola].
‘The second goal was a ball over from [Didier] Deschamps, which I reached before the defender. I kind of lobbed it over the goalkeeper. It was a very nice feeling seeing the ball coming over the goalkeeper almost in slow motion and dip down into the open goal. That made it 3-0, which was such a great feeling. To celebrate with the fans was superb.
‘The Barcelona team had a young Xavi in there, and Rivaldo was playing. He was a big superstar. In those games I was fighting a lot with Frank de Boer, who I changed the shirt with. I have framed that one at home!'
‘I will remember that home game for the rest of my life,’ Flo concluded.
‘What a feeling for myself to score two goals against Barcelona, and we won the game 3-1. That was definitely my number one moment for Chelsea.’
Flo scored in the second leg in the Nou Camp but the Blues bowed out 6-4 on aggregate, bringing an end to a thrilling first Champions League adventure.
Flo’s Chelsea story didn’t run for much longer, either. He was sold to Rangers for a club-record fee in November 2000. Twenty-five years later, his brace against Barcelona is still imprinted on the mind of any Blues fan lucky enough to be at Stamford Bridge that evening.
