A towering Tosin Adarabioyo header set us on our way to victory over ES Tunis in the Club World Cup, and the defender was delighted to get his name on the scoresheet and help us reach the last-16.
Tosin had already gone close when he rose highest to skilfully steer an Enzo Fernandez free-kick inside the far post with the half-time whistle approaching. Having last found the net against Wolves in January, the big defender chose a good time to add to his Blues tally.
‘I was happy to score my first goal for a while,’ smiled Tosin.
‘That’s five goals for the season now which isn’t a bad return. I definitely work on contributing offensively. You look at the best centre-halves in the world and they make a difference in both boxes.
‘We knew it was going to be a tough game so to get a clean sheet and go through, it’s a good win. We kept on pushing in added time, and it was nice to get the goals.’
The searing heat in Philadelphia, even at nighttime, understandably had an impact on proceedings. Tosin explained what our strategy to combat the temperatures was.
‘We had to keep the ball a lot and keep our shape,’ said Tosin, who finished the game as Chelsea skipper.
‘It’s a difficult environment to play in, even prepare in. We had to cut sessions a bit shorter so we can’t prepare the way we want to, but the gaffer is top at getting the information across that is needed and making sure we are fully prepared for games. We got a great result.’
The victory secured us second place in Group D, and next up we take on the winners of Group C, Benfica, who defeated Bayern Munich 1-0 yesterday. That impressive result only underlines the magnitude of the challenge that awaits Enzo Maresca’s men in Charlotte on Saturday.
‘They are a good side, they deserved to go through,’ stressed Tosin.
‘We know it’s going to be a really tough game so we will get ready for that now. We have to recover, switch our focus to Benfica, and we look forward to that game.’
