Familiar faces in the dugout

Mourinho has won four of his nine games against Chelsea as an opposition manager, although the Portuguese came out on the losing side when facing Lampard for the first time when Derby County beat Manchester United in the Carabao Cup last season.

The two shared over four years together at Stamford Bridge, winning multiple trophies, and the current Blues boss credits the Portuguese with giving him the self-belief to reach the very top of the game. Lampard is certain to be asked about how his relationship with Mourinho has changed over the years and how much he is looking forward to pitting his wits against the experience of his former coach once again.

Narrowing gap and reversing form

Much was made of Tottenham’s 14th-place league position when Mauricio Pochettino left the club a month ago, however an upturn in form has seen them move from 11 points adrift of the top four to within striking distance this weekend.

They have won four of their five Premier League games under Mourinho while, in contrast, Chelsea have picked up three points from the last 15 available. Form is said to go out the window in derby games but Lampard is likely to be questioned on how he is trying to get his side back to winning ways.

Latest on Tomori and others

The assembled media will certainly be interested in which players Lampard has available for the trip to north London, with Fikayo Tomori among those to have been sidelined with injury in recent weeks. There will also be questions about others in the squad who have been absent recently, including Ross Barkley and Olivier Giroud.

Restoring normal service

After winning at the Bridge for the first time in 28 years in April last year, Spurs managed to put together a run of three consecutive wins against the Blues, spanning both Premier League and Carabao Cup competitions.

However, Maurizio Sarri’s side managed to overturn a 1-0 cup semi-final deficit to progress to Wembley last season and sealed a 2-0 win at the Bridge in February to restore normal order to the Chelsea-Tottenham proceedings. Lampard will know as much as anyone how much this game means and he will probably be asked about the significance of the contest when the cameras start rolling at Cobham on Friday lunchtime.

Latest Chelsea team news

Tomori has missed the past two matches with a hip injury, although Lampard reported prior to the Bournemouth game that the young defender was expected to return to training this week.

Fellow England international Barkley has also been struggling with a troublesome ankle problem and has not featured since mid-October, while illness subsequently ruled him out of our win over Aston Villa at the start of the month.

Giroud was reported injured prior to our trip to Everton and has not featured since. Ruben Loftus-Cheek is making progress with his comeback from a long-term Achilles injury and was back out on the grass this week in the latest milestone of his rehabilitation.

Latest Tottenham team news

Goalkeeper Hugo Lloris has been missing since the start of October with an elbow injury and the Frenchman is unlikely to return until January at the earliest. In his absence, Paulo Gazzaniga has deputised with Michel Vorm also sidelined.

Ben Davies, Erik Lamela and Tanguy Ndombele are also all likely to be absent for Mourinho’s men.
