When does the summer transfer window close in England?

The 2026 summer transfer window in England closes at 11pm UK time on Tuesday 1 September 2026.

The window, which opened on Monday 15 June, has returned to the traditional 11pm deadline following last summer’s earlier finish.

When does the 2026 summer transfer window close in Spain, Italy, Germany and France?

The major European leagues also close their windows on Tuesday 1 September.

Clubs in the Bundesliga, Serie A and Ligue 1 have until 7pm UK time to complete their business. The window in Spain remains open until 11pm UK time.

Which countries can still sign players after that date?

Players can still leave English clubs after the Premier League window shuts if the destination country’s registration period remains open.

Clubs in the Netherlands and Major League Soccer can sign players until Wednesday 2 September. The Scottish window closes at 5pm on Thursday 3 September, with Austria and Belgium also open that day.

The deadline in Turkey is Friday 4 September, while clubs in Mexico have until 11 September and those in Portugal until 15 September. The Saudi Arabian window remains open until 12 October.

Unattached players can also be signed after the deadline, subject to the relevant competition’s registration and squad-list rules.

What happens after the deadline?

If two clubs reach an agreement shortly before 11pm, they can submit a deal sheet to the Premier League confirming the transfer.

That provides an additional two hours to complete and submit the remaining documentation. As a result, transfers may still be formally completed or announced after the window has closed.

What are the Premier League squad list rules?

Premier League clubs can make unrestricted changes to their squad lists while the transfer window remains open.

After the deadline, each club submits a squad containing no more than 25 senior players. No more than 17 of those players can be non-homegrown, with the remaining places reserved for homegrown players.

A homegrown player, irrespective of nationality, is somebody who was registered with a club affiliated to the Football Association or Football Association of Wales for three entire seasons or 36 months before turning 21, or before the end of the season in which they turned 21.

Players under-21 do not count towards the 25-player limit and remain eligible to play in the Premier League. For the 2026/27 season, that applies to players born on or after 1 January 2005.

Who have Chelsea signed this summer?
