Another busy transfer window for Chelsea is approaching its end as we edge toward the conclusion of the winter window in January 2023. Here you can find all the information you need on transfer deadline day, the January transfer window and the rules on new signings in the Premier League and Champions League…

When does the transfer window close?

The transfer window for all divisions in England, including the Premier League, shuts at 11pm on Tuesday 31 January.

When does the transfer window close in Spain, Italy, Germany and France?

The transfer window will close on the same Tuesday 31 January date in the vast majority of European leagues.

However, among the major leagues, there are differences in the time of the window’s closure. Spain shares the same 11pm (all times UK) deadline as England, but as always clubs in Germany must complete their signings by the end of the working day, 5pm. French teams have until 10pm, but those in the Italian top flight need to finish their business by 7pm.

Which countries can still sign players after that date?

A small number of European countries have a later winter transfer window, meaning they can still register new players after 31 January. The most notable of those are Austria (6 February), Turkey (8 February) and Switzerland (15 February).

For a few countries, mainly in Eastern Europe, the winter transfer window has not even begun yet, with the last UEFA nation to close their mid-season window being Ukraine (1 March).

When is the transfer deadline for Chelsea Women?

There are two different deadlines for women’s teams in England, both on the same Tuesday 31 January date. That means Chelsea Women and other Women’s Super League sides need to complete any domestic transfers involving other English clubs by 5pm, but can still register new signings from abroad until the international transfer deadline passes at midnight.

What happens after that deadline?

If a transfer is agreed between two clubs late in the day, the Premier League can grant some additional time for the relevant documentation to be completed and submitted.

A deal sheet can be sent to the authorities to indicate that a transfer agreement has been reached, after which the clubs are handed an additional two hours to complete the remaining paperwork.

Can January signings play in the Champions League?

All of the clubs competing in the last 16 of the Champions League can add up to three new players to their List A squad for the remainder of the competition, with the deadline to register signings with UEFA at 11pm (UK time) on Thursday 2 February. There are no restrictions on players who have already represented other clubs in this season’s competition.

However, if those new additions take the total number of players on List A – comprising at least eight locally-training players, four of whom must have come through the club’s own ranks between the ages of 15 and 21 – beyond the maximum of 25, other players must be removed from the squad to make space.

List B, made up of players aged 21 or younger with two years’ training at their club, can still be updated at any time up to midnight (central European time) before a match.

What are the Premier League squad list rules?

When the January transfer window closes, clubs must submit an updated squad list to the Premier League for the remainder of the season, following the same rules as the initial squad requirements. Premier League clubs may register 25 over-21 first-team players, of whom a minimum of eight should be homegrown, in addition to any number of under-21 players (born on or after 1 January 2001) regardless of the country of their birth.

In this instance, homegrown is defined as someone of any nationality who was 21 or older on 1 January 2022 and spent a total of three years registered to an English or Welsh club prior to the end of the season in which he turned 21.

In order for a player to be available for a team’s next match, their transfer must be registered with the Premier League by midday and the last working day preceding the game, although on deadline that will only affect the four clubs competing in the Carabao Cup semi-finals on Tuesday and Wednesday evening (Newcastle United, Southampton, Manchester United and Nottingham Forest).

Who have Chelsea signed this transfer window?

The Blues have completed the signings of Benoit Badiashile, David Fofana, Joao Felix (on loan), Noni Madueke, Mykhailo Mudryk, Andrey Santos and Malo Gusto (back to Lyon on loan) this month.

Chelsea Women have brought in Maika Hamano, although the young Japanese international has since moved on loan to Hammarby in Sweden.
