Trevoh Chalobah is encouraged by Chelsea’s start to the season but knows there is plenty of work to do if we are to continue the positive momentum away to Brentford on Saturday evening.

The defender has been ever-present as we have conceded just one goal in our opening three games – and that a long-range thunderbolt by West Ham’s Lucas Paqueta.

After firing a blank on the opening day, we have scored seven times in our past two games, including a goal for Chalobah in the big win at the London Stadium. He is satisfied with how things have gone so far, individually and collectively.

‘It's always nice to start the season well, on a high,’ says Chalobah. ‘Obviously, ending the international break on a win, unbeaten - that's the goal.

'There's a good vibe around the players coming back from the summer tournament. We're confident and game by game, we've just got to take it.

For any player, you want to play every game,’ he adds.‘I want to give my best, work hard in training, and do my all to be in contention to start. I’m working on things I need to work on, also, and just trying to help the team.’

Chalobah was in the Chelsea defence when we first visited the Gtech Community Stadium in October 2021. It needed a resilient display that evening to leave Brentford with a 1-0 win, and every game against the Bees since has followed a similar pattern.

The 26-year-old knows what to expect on Saturday night. ‘It’s a really tough place to go, a lot of second balls, a lot of fight,’ says Chalobah.

‘You just have to be physical. Brentford has always been a physical team, and the way they play, their style of play, we’ve got to be ready and know what's coming. It's going to be a battle.

‘That’s the first step we have to take. Then from there we show our quality and hopefully we use that momentum, the confidence we have, to go and win the game.’

Chalobah believes every game against London opponents carries an ‘extra bit of motivation’ for the players, and this weekend’s game will be no different.

With the start of our Champions League campaign on the horizon – in the shape of an exciting fixture away to Bayern Munich - it would be easy to lose focus on the task at hand. Chalobah says the Blues will avoid such pitfalls.

‘We’re taking each game as it comes, and you’ve got to be like that because now we’re in the Champions League, there’s going to be a lot of games.

‘We can’t just keep thinking about the game after, forgetting about the game that’s coming. So we’ve got to take it day by and prepare for the game ahead.’
