The lack of a clinical edge in front of goal, plus some strong Newcastle defending, was the reason for our frustrating home defeat to the Magpies, according to Blues defender Trevoh Chalobah.

We were left to rue missed opportunities at Stamford Bridge as a dogged Newcastle backline frustrated us throughout the 90 minutes – and a breakaway goal in the first half from Anthony Gordon ensured the visitors headed back to Tyneside with the three points.

Liam Rosenior’s side created chances, with Magpies goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale making several saves. Chalobah himself nodded wide from close range late on, and Reece James saw a late free-kick cannon off the post as we tried in vain to take something from the game.

For Chalobah, who started in the heart of our defence alongside Wesley Fofana, it was clear where the game was lost, and he was honest in his post-match assessment.

‘It was one of those games where the final bit just didn’t go our way,’ the Cobham graduate explained after the game.

‘We created a lot of chances that we didn’t take. We had a lot of possession and played a lot of the game in their half. Newcastle defended deep and defended well in fairness. We were just lacking that final touch in front of goal.

‘I think it was a mixture of things [as to why we didn't score]. A mixture of our end product not quite being there, and Newcastle defending well with their low block. They were obviously clinical with their goal, which won them the game too.

‘That happens in football sometimes, it’s the fine margins and we just need to pick ourselves up and go again, because we’ve got a lot of big games coming up.’

The Blues have little time to reflect on this defeat as our attention quickly turns to Tuesday night and the second leg of our Champions League Round of 16 clash with Paris Saint-Germain.

The Blues have a three-goal deficit to overturn if we are to progress to the quarter-finals, having lost 5-2 in the French capital last week.

However, Chalobah insists confidence and belief remain high within the group and that the focus is now firmly on a huge game under the lights in SW6.

‘This is Chelsea and it’s what we are playing for,’ Trev responded when asked about having another big game so quickly after this one.

‘We want to be competing in the best competitions, both in Europe and in the Premier League, and we have a big game on Tuesday that I’m sure will be very special.

‘It’s going to be a tough challenge but we are going to give it everything, so we need to move on from this game and focus on some big challenges ahead, starting with PSG.’
