Trevoh Chalobah delivered an honest assessment after our Premier League defeat to London rivals Arsenal, stating the Blues have to ‘look at ourselves and step up’.
We were edged out 2-1 by the Gunners in north London yesterday, with the game settled by set-pieces. Two were in Arsenal’s favour via William Saliba and Jurrien Timber, while a Piero Hincapie own goal had earlier drawn us level at the Emirates.
The Blues were reduced to 10 men in the second half when Pedro Neto received a second yellow card, but despite our man disadvantage, we came close to grabbing an equaliser late on. A string of fine David Raya saves denied us a share of the points.
Chalobah, however, was disappointed by the manner of the goals we conceded and believes it’s something we must learn from and eradicate quickly.
‘We have to look at ourselves because we’ve been undone from two set-plays,’ the Chelsea Academy graduate explained. ‘We work a lot on set-pieces, both defensively and offensively, and we know how strong Arsenal are at them. These are the little details and we need to improve on them.
‘We have to know our roles both collectively and individually, and we all need to step up. We’ve conceded too many goals from set-pieces, that’s why we are where we are in the table.’
Chalobah and his Chelsea team-mates have the opportunity to respond on Wednesday evening as we head to Villa Park to take on Aston Villa. It is an important fixture in the race for Champions League qualification.
The 26-year-old is under no illusions of the task ahead, but feels it’s time for the Blues to 'step up’ and turn our good performances into victories.
‘We have to look at ourselves and really step up now, because we’re heading into a crucial part of the season,’ the defender added. ‘It’s true that we have a tough run of fixtures coming up, but all games are like that in the Premier League, to be honest.
‘It’s time for everyone to keep positive, turn the performances into the three points and push up the table.’
