Chelsea head into tomorrow night’s Champions League knockout clash with Lille in confident mood following two victories in the past few days, with Thomas Tuchel expressing his delight at how his players have approached each game.
Tuchel led the Blues to six Premier League points this week, with a controlled 3-1 victory away at Norwich being followed by a patient 1-0 win at home to Newcastle which came courtesy of a late Kai Havertz winner.
Both games offered up different challenges for Tuchel’s side, especially considering the off-field noise currently surrounding the club’s future, with our German head coach expecting another tough test that his players will need to adapt to when we take to the pitch in northern France on Wednesday evening.
On the pitch is where Tuchel feels at home, it is where he, his staff and his players can control matters and, following the victories over Norwich and Newcastle, the boss reports on the current state within the dressing room.
‘The mood is good,’ Tuchel said of his players. ‘We couldn’t have two more different games than we had, in Norwich and against Newcastle in terms of playing style and obstacles to overcome.
‘We relied heavily on our skilful play and controlled the game versus Norwich, and we managed to win the game against Newcastle. This was a question of mentality, resilience and physicality, a question of focus and defending, being brave and staying committed.
‘That makes any coach in the world very happy how we won this match, we won it late and yes, the mood is good.
‘I am convinced that the team knows what it takes to be able to perform like this and produce results. This is what we are up against tomorrow at Lille.
‘When I say we allow ourselves to focus on what we control, I mean it. This is what we do in the training ground.
‘Like I said, the focus is to take the responsibility for the people who take the responsibility that we are in a big club. There are hundreds of them. This is what we do in the moment.’
