Kiano Dyer and Shumaira Mheuka played the full game as England’s journey at the European Under-19 Championships came to an end in Romania.
The Young Lions were beaten 4-2 by the Netherlands and that result, coupled with a 91st-minute Germany winner over Norway in the other game, meant Will Antwi’s side slipped to third place in Group B. That is not enough for a place in the semi-finals.
Dyer started in midfield for England and Mheuka (pictured top) led the line but it was the table-topping Dutch who dominated proceedings. They were 3-0 up by half-time.
England had mounted a stirring comeback against Germany earlier in the week from 5-1 down, and Ethan Wheatley’s goal early in the second half ignited belief they could repeat the trick.
The Dutch stood firm, though, and restored their three-goal advantage before Jesse Derry netted a consolation in injury time from a Mheuka pass. Harrison Murray-Campbell, the other Chelsea player in the squad, was an unused substitute.
