Chelsea will this week discover the six sides we will face in the league phase of this season's UEFA Women's Champions League. Here's all you need to know ahead of the draw, including when it takes place, the new format of this year's competition, and which sides the Blues could face.
Chelsea head coach Sonia Bompastor has been clear in her ambition to lift the Women's Champions League trophy with Chelsea, having previously won the competition as both a player and a manager with Lyon.
This year, the teams will compete in a league phase to determine who advances through to the knockout rounds.
On Friday, we will find out who our opponents will be in the initial phase of the competition as Europe’s elite teams bid to reach the final in Oslo next May.
Here's everything you need to know ahead of the draw...
When is the Women’s Champions League draw?
The draw takes place in Nyon, Switzerland on Friday 19 September. It starts at 11am UK time.
How can I watch the draw?
The UEFA website will be streaming the draw live around the world, while viewers in the UK can watch it on Disney+. We will also bring you all the latest on the Chelsea Official App and website.
How does the Women’s Champions League draw work?
The old format saw 16 teams enter the group stage of the competition, with four groups of four playing each other home and away. The top two teams from each group would then advance to the knockout phase.
UEFA have now replaced that format with the league phase, expanding the pool to 18 teams. Each club will play six matches, three at home and three away, against six different opponents.
Clubs will be ranked and placed in three seeding pots based on their latest club coefficient ranking. Each club will then be drawn to play two opponents from each of these pots, playing one match against a team from each of the three pots at home, and one match from each of the three pots away from home.
The results of each match will determine the league table, with the points system the same as in the Women’s Super League: three for a win, one for a draw, zero for a defeat.
The final night of the league phase (17 December) will see all matches kick off at the same time. The teams that finish in the top four places will advance straight through to the quarter-finals.
Teams placed 5th to 12th will enter a two-legged play-off. The four clubs that win their ties progress to the quarter-finals, where they will each face one of the top-four finishers, who will be seeded and will play the second leg of their quarter-final at home.
Clubs that finish 13th and below will exit the competition.
Who can Chelsea draw in the Women’s Champions League?
The draw will see 18 unique fixture lists drawn up in the league phase. No club will be able to play another from their own league, and each club cannot play more than two teams from one country.
Arsenal, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Benfica, Chelsea, Juventus, OL Lyonnes, Paris Saint-Germain and Wolfsburg have already qualified.
The rest of the teams in the draw will depend on the results of the second legs of the third qualifying rounds. Those matches take place on Thursday, ahead of Friday’s draw.
