Chelsea Under-18s head coach Hassan Sulaiman and his players aren't being distracted by the chance to seal the league title on Saturday, keeping their focus purely on securing the three points against Norwich City in a match that will be shown live on the Official Chelsea App.
The Blues have the chance to wrap-up the Under-18 Premier League South title on Saturday when they face Norwich City at Cobham, in a game you can watch live on the Official Chelsea App.
It represents our final game in hand, meaning we go into the 11am kick-off knowing a victory would give us an insurmountable lead over West Ham United at the top of the table and ensure the southern title is ours for the first time since we triumphed in four consecutive years between 2015 and 2018.
However, despite all eyes in the division being on Chelsea Under-18s to see if we can wrap things up this weekend, head coach Hassan Sulaiman is keeping his players focused firmly on the task at hand, avoiding any distractions or potential complacency.
‘We will just be focused on getting the performance right and if we do that then the result and everything else will follow,' said Sulaiman.
‘You never count your chickens before they hatch, you can never get complacent. We were a bit complacent in the second half when we played Norwich earlier in the season, even if we still managed to win 6-3, so we want to avoid that this time around.
‘We’ll continue to take it a game at a time and we know that if we perform well, like we have done in recent weeks, then we’ll achieve a positive outcome on Saturday.’
Our Under-18s have shown great form going into the contest, remaining undefeated in the last 14 league games, winning 11 of those, in a run which goes all the way back to October.
The team has been particularly impressive going forward, with the 3-2 win over Leicester City last time out making it 10 goals scored in our previous three matches.
Top scorer Donnell McNeilly also made it 20 league goals for our Under-18s this season against the Foxes, while Ato Ampah and Shumaira Mheuka continued to demonstrate their own return to form following spells out injured by finding the net. That means Sulaiman will have plenty of attacking options available to him when we take on Norwich.
'That’s a testament to the talent that we have in the Academy,' he added. 'We’re an Academy that always produces exciting players and in this group we have a number of attackers who are able to deliver in every game.
'Shim and Ato have come back and as you can imagine they’ve missed a number of games so they’re hungry, they’re firing, they want to score. And if it isn’t them, then we’ve got Tyrique [George] and Frankie [Runham], and midfielders who will deliver goals like Reiss [Denny].
'So we’ve got an exciting group of attacking players, which makes for some very difficult decisions for us coaches when selecting the team. We’ve got some real good talent going forward.'
Sulaiman also discussed the pressure his players have been facing. For much of the season that was based around the need to catch leaders West Ham, due to us playing several games less than our title rivals in the first half of the campaign.
That has now changed to a different kind of pressure after we took the lead in the table, meaning we are now the ones being chased, but our head coach insists their approach remains the same regardless.
He said: 'Although you have the different pressures of each game, our approach has been pretty consistent throughout the season.
'We have our game strategy in terms of how we want to approach the match and what the opposition does and how we can minimise some of their strengths and capitalise on some of their weaknesses.
'But our approach is the same with how we want to play, what we ask the boys to do - being brave in possession and being good in defensive situations. So our game plan has been pretty consistent.
'Although there has been the pressure of wanting to win the league and stay at the top, we take one game at a time. I’ve been pretty consistent with that message and thankfully we’ve been able to deliver some really good performances.'
Hopefully that will continue on Saturday as we look to cement our place at the top of the Under-18 Premier League southern table and book a spot in the national final against Manchester United.
