Hassan Sulaiman's boys were involved in an exciting game against Spurs at the weekend and the Under-18s head coach reflected on what was a pleasing result...
Chelsea made it two wins from two in the Premier League Cup as we beat Spurs in an end-to-end game that could have gone either way.
The north London side opened the scoring early on and added a second midway through the first half. Jimmy-Jay Morgan got a goal back for us, but Tottenham seemed to have killed the game off with a third scored just after half-time.
Wholesale changes from Hassan, in which he brought on all three substitutes at once, made the difference. A goal from Shumaira Mheuka and a brace from Reiss Denny put us in front.
It was a nervy end as captain Travis Akomeah was sent off but our boys managed to see the game out well.
In his assessment of the game Hassan said, 'It was one of those games where we had planned to build on our last few performances but we could not get a consistent hold of the game, the way that we wanted to. Spurs are a very good side and it was a balanced match which tipped to our side and Spurs' side at various points.'
'We did achieve the ultimate outcome and I am pleased about that. To come out of the game with a positive result despite the performance is always a positive. There are a number of positive takeaways, the resilience and character that the boys showed, should be praised.'
He continued: 'Regardless of the result, the game is never over and it was good to see that we played until the final whistle. Even when we were down in the game, we were able to turn it around.'
Denny and Mheuka came on in the second half and got themselves on the scoresheet. Hassan was pleased with their impact.
'I have to commend our substitutes, they played an integral role in turning the game around. The belief and energy the substitutes injected into the game was remarkable. It is a reminder to all Academy players that every minute on the pitch matters, whether you start or come off the bench.'
He went on to speak on the collective mental toughness of the group. He said, 'Every game provides a different challenge and this was a game that required a lot more of our mental strength. We always want our football to do the talking and in most cases this season, we have just been much stronger than our opponents but in tight, closer games, sometimes it is just about who wants to win more and in this case it was us.'
The London derby was full of ups and downs but Hassan had a calm demeanour on the sidelines throughout the match.
'I always try to stay calm in all situations as it helps me to think rationally, I do not allow my emotions to get too heightened. My demeanour in a game is on purpose, because I feel like it is important that I take the time to just gather my thoughts and then respond accordingly.'
Our young Blues are next in action on Saturday 28 October as they take on Tottenham again but this time in the Under-18s Premier League.
