Chelsea Under-18s take on Stoke City this afternoon at Cobham in our opening Premier League Cup fixture of the 2024/25 season.

Hassan Sulaiman and his players are aiming to bounce back from consecutive defeats in the Under-18 Premier League, having suffered a tough 1-0 loss against London rivals Arsenal last time out.

Despite an early setback when Harry McGlinchey was dismissed 15 minutes into the match, the team remained resilient and created good chances with only ten men. But unfortunately, we were unable to counter Arsenal's first-half goal.

Although the Blues have not collected the points hoped for, Sulaiman is focusing on the positives and hopes to see a strong response as we head into our first cup game of the new season.

‘The performance in the Arsenal game was really positive,’ said Sulaiman. ‘Although it wasn’t the result we wanted, the players took on board what I said well. I asked for a reaction and we got one.

‘More than anything, I wanted to see character and determination, and we definitely saw that. Their actions off the ball were more in line with what we were looking for; I felt the boys really dug deep.

‘In terms of shape and character, the boys can take a lot of positives from the game. I only expect us to build on this from here. They showed a fighting spirit, and that kind of spirit will help us overcome challenges.’

Sulaiman's focus is now firmly on the challenges ahead – and that begins with Stoke's visit to Cobham and the start of a cup campaign.

He said: ‘I’m always optimistic about every competition because I know the ability our boys have. We have a hunger and desire to succeed.

‘Last season, we reached the quarter-finals against Leicester, so we have that drive to go even further this time round. I expect us to do well, but naturally, you have to take each game as it comes.

‘I have no doubts that the boys will perform well and give their all on the pitch.’

With the young Blues facing a quick turnaround, having just come off an Under-18 Premier League fixture last weekend, they are now heading into this midweek clash before returning to league action on Saturday against Leicester City.

And Sulaiman has highlighted the preparation and mindset his players will need to secure victories.

He said: ‘We want to perform well in every single game. We set high standards for every competition and we hope our performances will naturally lead to good results.

‘The boys have a strong desire to win, which pushes them even further. We approach this game just like any other - with hard work and determination.

‘In the lead-up, we train hard and focus on the details to ensure that, when game day comes, we are ready for anything.

‘As I have mentioned, we want to see that psychological factor. The boys need to be mentally prepared and mature for the season ahead, whether that’s for cup or league fixtures.’

Sulaiman has also outlined what he hopes to see from the boys’ performance as the team progresses into the 2024/25 season.

‘I want the boys to continue to mature and learn how to deal with different situations,' he continued. 'We will build on our recent performances and hopefully progress in this Premier League Cup campaign.

‘The boys have now been introduced to Under-18s football, especially those who have moved up an age group. With the opportunities and experience they’ve gained, they should be more familiar with the intensity and pace of the game.

‘We want to see a positive mindset and another strong reaction. I’m confident I’ll be impressed with their performance, and we can continue progressing and learning.’
