The 2023 UEFA European Under-21 Championship begins today and with four Chelsea players involved, we preview the tournament being held in Georgia and Romania.

Noni Madueke, Levi Colwill, Mykhailo Mudryk and Ian Maatsen are the Blues representatives set to feature.

In total 16 teams participate, and the final will be held in the Georgian Black Sea city of Batumi on Saturday 8 July. Germany are the defending champions.

Ukraine

Despite being a regular in the senior Ukraine team, Mykhailo Mudryk has made himself available for the Under-21s this summer.

He last played for them in November 2021, at the start of qualifying for this tournament. Mudryk has three goals and three assists in 16 appearances at this level.

Ukraine qualified back in September with a 5-3 aggregate victory over Slovakia. With six players capped at senior level and over half their squad with 15 or more Under-21 caps to their name, they are one of the more experienced teams competing, although this is just their third appearance.

They are in a tough group alongside co-hosts Romania, perennial contenders Spain, and Croatia.

Group fixtures

Ukraine v Croatia – 21 June, 5pm, Bucharest

Romania v Ukraine – 24 June, 5pm, Bucharest

Spain v Ukraine – 27 June, 7.45pm, Bucharest

Netherlands

Ian Maatsen’s Under-21 journey began at the start of qualification for this tournament. He featured in half of their 10 qualifiers, scoring against Bulgaria and providing assists in two other games.

More recently Maatsen has played 45 minutes in each of their friendlies this year, including one against the Japanese Olympic team last week. Erwin van de Looi has most often used him at left-back, but the 21-year-old has also played on the left side of midfield.

Netherlands qualified as Group E winners and will be looking to repeat their back-to-back triumphs of 2006 and 2007. They will first need to get out of a tough group containing Belgium, Portugal and co-hosts Georgia.

Belgium v Netherlands – 21 June, 5pm, Tbilisi

Portugal v Netherlands – 24 June, 5pm, Tbilisi

Netherlands v Georgia – 27 June, 5pm, Tbilisi

England

Noni Madueke and Levi Colwill are both in Lee Carsley’s England squad. Madueke’s debut at this level actually came at the last Euros, held behind closed doors two years ago in Slovenia, and he has seven caps in total, scoring against France in March.

Carsley generally prefers a 4-2-3-1 shape with Madueke as one of the wingers. Since his debut last March, Colwill has been a mainstay in his central defence alongside Taylor Harwood-Bellis, who was a team-mate of Maatsen in Burnley’s Championship-winning team.

With the likes of Morgan Gibbs-White, Curtis Jones, Jacob Ramsey and Emile Smith Rowe, England have plenty of attacking talent, but they need to overcome a poor recent record at the tournament, having failed to get out of the group in 2019 and 2021. They are based in Georgia.
