Ahead of facing Sunderland tomorrow afternoon, Enzo Maresca highlighted a moment between Enzo Fernandez and Estevao Willian against Ajax that demonstrated the attitude he believes will be vital for Chelsea’s success this season.
It could have passed some supporters by on Wednesday evening, as it was a simple gesture from one team-mate to another. But when Fernandez, who had netted from the spot earlier in the game, handed Estevao the ball to take the penalty after the Brazilian was tripped in the box, Maresca’s evening was made.
Of course, it helped that Estevao thumped the penalty into the top corner on our way to an emphatic 5-1 victory over Ajax in the UEFA Champions League. Just as important for our head coach, though, was what it said about the bond and togetherness in our squad.
That is something he has consistently underlined as crucial to any team’s chances of competing at the very top – and he reiterated that feeling as we prepare to return to Premier League action against Sunderland.
‘It was very, very good,’ Maresca said. ‘I told the players after the game we were very happy about winning against Ajax and having the three points, but the main thing about that game was when Enzo gave the ball to Estevao.
‘It shows how we are as a team in this moment and how they are all together in terms of togetherness and effort. This is what we need to do something important.’
That penalty is one which Estevao is sure to remember for a long time, as it gave him his first goal in European competition. It also contributed to a piece of history – with Marc Guiu and Tyrique George also finding the net, we became the first club to have three teenagers on the score sheet in the same Champions League game.
Estevao’s role in that also made him our youngest-ever scorer in the Champions League, a title Guiu had briefly held for all of 33 minutes, as Reece James’ record was broken twice in one game. George was also younger than James and Guiu, so would have taken the record himself had Estevao not beaten him to it.
The Brazilian is certainly making an impact at Chelsea that belies his tender age of just 18, but Maresca believes that in his team-mates, coaches and family, the young forward has the ideal support around him to continue his development and fulfil his undoubted potential with the Blues.
‘We have Andrey Santos and Joao Pedro who are helping him a lot, because they have been in Europe for some time,’ Enzo explained.
‘As a staff and club, we try to help him and give him the attention he needs, but that’s not just with Estevao, that’s with all the young players who come from abroad.
‘He is a special player and the good thing about him is he just thinks about football. He enjoys and is happy, and his family is doing a fantastic job in the way they have brought him up.’
Hopefully, there will be plenty more unity on show – along with some more special moments from our young Brazilian – to bring a smile to Maresca’s face when we return to Stamford Bridge to take on Sunderland at 3pm on Saturday.
