Chelsea’s third fixture of our summer tour of the USA takes us to Georgia to play Club America – and you can expect the good times to roll…
Anybody who attended our pre-season friendly against Newcastle United in Atlanta last summer, or who has been present at any of our three previous games with Club America, knows what to expect: a party!
Atlanta loves its football. Their MLS team Atlanta United play their home games at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium - where we will take on Club America on Wednesday 31 July - and average nearly 50,000 spectators.
Remarkably, that is the second-highest figure across both North and South America. Only Flamengo in Brazil average more spectators per home game.
Don't miss your chance to make unforgettable memories when Chelsea visit the USA this summer.
The fans make a racket, helped by the fantastic acoustics inside the futuristic Mercedes-Benz Stadium, which opened in 2017 and has an eye-catching retractable roof and exterior design.
Our Chelsea in America supporters groups will no doubt be in fine voice, led by the Georgia Blues, and if our previous games against Club America are anything to go by, we can expect the Mexican supporters to travel in their numbers.
It has been a carnival atmosphere on each of the three prior occasions we have taken on the Mexico City giants, boosted by the expat community.
We first met in 2007, in Stanford, California, when goals from Florent Malouda and John Terry helped us recover from a goal down to win. Balloons, streamers and flags that spanned the width of the pitch lit up the recently renovated stadium.
Two years later, we reconvened for just the second event ever held at the extraordinary AT&T Stadium when, as Chelsea supporter Matt Pursley told us recently, ‘the great atmosphere with the Club America and Chelsea fans did not stop the whole time’. The Blues won again, 2-0 this time.
Fast-forward to 2022 and it was another ‘carnival’ vibe, as our match report described the atmosphere, during a game that ebbed and flowed and was eventually won 2-1 by Chelsea in front of nearly 50,000 spectators on a steamy night in Las Vegas.
Enzo Maresca and his players will be aiming for four Chelsea wins out of four against the Mexicans, and in a city known for its love of the game, in a stadium as spectacular as any in the States, and against a team with a fanatical fanbase that will be sure to cross the border in their numbers, be prepared to party!
