Everything you need to know about our matchday five trip to Spain in the Champions League where a win would puts us through…

With three teams tied on the same number of points in Group H, the stakes are high for our return to European football as Frank Lampard’s Blues make their final trip abroad in the group stage, taking on Valencia.

When and where

The match takes place at the 55,000-capacity Mestalla Stadium in Valencia, Spain’s third-largest city, on Wednesday 27 November. Kick-off is 6.55pm local time.

Latest Chelsea team news

Options are increasing for Lampard as his squad gets closer to a clean bill of health, although Callum Hudson-Odoi misses out again after returning from international duty with a hamstring injury.

Ross Barkley has been out for the past five weeks with a troublesome ankle knock and is another who has stayed at home. Antonio Rudiger remains sidelined along with long-term absentee Ruben Loftus-Cheek, but the German defender is now 'days and weeks' away from returning to action, rather than months as Lampard reported in his pre-match press conference.

How things stand in the group

Group H is the most finely poised of all the Champions League groups in this season’s competition, with Chelsea, Ajax and Valencia all tied on seven points with two games remaining. Lille are languishing at the bottom with just one point and have already been eliminated.

A win for the Blues at the Mestalla would ensure our place in the last-16. That is because the only way Valencia could catch us is by beating Ajax on the final day and, if we lost to Lille, that would leave all three teams on 10 points. In that situation, the head-to-head record among the three teams would apply.

Therefore, our seven-point haul could not be matched by Valencia in that event, which means a win takes us through. The same applies to Valencia. A draw would maintain the Spanish side's superior head-to-head record over us and take qualification out of our hands.
