After winning the Johan Cruyff Talent of the Year Award in 2025, the organisation dedicated a community pitch in Veerle Buurman's honour and the Chelsea defender celebrated International Women's Day by opening her own Cruyff Court in Eindhoven.
As part of Buurman's 2025 award, she was given the opportunity to choose a Cruyff Court that would carry her name. The 19-year-old opted for Eindhoven – where she signed her first professional contract with PSV Women – and opened the court on Sunday 8 March to coincide with International Women's Day.
Cruyff Courts are pitches designed by the Johan Cruyff Foundation to provide a safe, free-to-access space for children and communities to play football and other sports.
The Cruyff Court in Woensel, Eindhoven is part of a multifunctional space for sport and a meeting place in the neighbourhood. Right next to the football pitch are 3x3 and 5x5 basketball courts, allowing young people to practise different sports in one central place.
Buurman signed for Chelsea from PSV in 2024, before she was immediately loaned back to the Dutch side to continue gaining valuable experience in the Eredivisie Vrouwen.
Back at Chelsea for the start of the current campaign, the defender has now become an integral part of Sonia Bompastor's first team set-up, having made 11 starts and two substitute appearances so far this season.
It has been a successful couple of weeks for Buurman as the opening of her Cruyff Court followed her first competitive international goal for the Netherlands, scored in a 2-2 draw in a 2027 Women's World Cup qualifier against Poland on Tuesday.
Congratulations, Veerle!
