After an undefeated March in the Women’s Super League and picking up the season’s first silverware in the Women’s League Cup, it’s time to have your say on Chelsea Women’s Player of the Month.
It was a delayed start to the March action following the international break, but when we opened the month we did it in style, by claiming a trophy. That came in the final of the Women’s League Cup, when we defeated Manchester United 2-0 in Bristol.
Although we suffered defeat to Arsenal in the first leg of our UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-final, in the Women’s Super League we claimed two victories from our three fixtures, beating Brighton & Hove Albion 2-1 at Kingsmeadow and drawing 1-1 away at London City Lionesses, before concluding with a come-back victory to claim all three points in a highly entertaining 4-3 win over Aston Villa.
We have nominated four players who impressed during March in our Player of the Month shortlist, but the final choice between Veerle Buurman, Lauren James, Sjoeke Nusken and Alyssa Thompson is down to you, the Chelsea supporters.
Buurman continued to grow in stature with the Blues, the 19-year-old looking increasingly at home in English football despite her young age, as she started every game for us in March and put in some assured performances in our defence.
Another strong month for James saw her open the scoring at Ashton Gate as we triumphed in the League Cup final, before getting a goal and assist in the win over Villa, the former being nominated for Women’s Super League Goal of the Month. And although our Champions League trip to the Emirates Stadium ended in defeat, Lauren’s incredible strike there will live long in the memory.
Thompson was another who was named in Sonia Bompastor’s starting line-up for all five of our games across three competitions in March. The winger got the first of our two goals in the win over Brighton and got her hands on her first winner’s medal with the Blues in Bristol.
For Nusken, it was another month when she was a model of consistency in the Chelsea midfield, putting in a string of top performances. The German’s highlight came with the winning goal against Villa, when her precise finish completed a slick passing move and finally settled the game with eight minutes remaining.
