Chelsea and Leeds United have a storied history which will rekindle when the sides face off at Elland Road on Wednesday evening. Ahead of the game, we are asking you to pick a highlight from previous meetings between these famous old rivals.
We have narrowed the shortlist of memorable moments down to ten, going all the way back to 1970 and that iconic FA Cup final showdown.
The Blues also enjoyed notable success against Leeds in the 1980s, and even though matches between the sides have been few and far between for much of this century, there are some more recent nominations on our list.

Hutchinson keeps Cup dream alive | April 1970
Chelsea were trailing 2-1 in the 1970 FA Cup final with just four minutes remaining when Ian Hutchinson equalised with a towering header to force a replay…
Ossie hangs in the air | April 1970
…where his strike partner Peter Osgood netted an iconic diving header from Charlie Cooke’s cross to draw us level at 1-1 and send the replay to extra-time.
Webb wins Chelsea the Cup | April 1970
Time was running out but there was David Webb to force the ball over the line at the back post from a long throw (pictured top). For the first time in our history, Chelsea were FA Cup winners!
Promotion sealed in style | April 1984
Kerry Dixon bagged a hat-trick as Chelsea smashed Leeds 5-0 to earn promotion back to the First Division in front of an ecstatic Stamford Bridge crowd.
Title winners | April 1989
Five years later Chelsea once again secured promotion – and this time the Division Two title as well – with a victory over Leeds at Stamford Bridge, John Bumstead scoring the only goal.
Comeback kings | August 1994
Our poor record at Elland Road looked set to continue early in the 1994/95 campaign as the home side raced into a two-nil lead inside 18 minutes. However, a Dennis Wise penalty and a John Spencer brace, including a very late winner, earned a fantastic comeback success.
Poyet secures Champions League football | May 1999
Though our dreams of winning the title had ended the previous month, Gus Poyet’s close-range header ensured we beat closest challengers Leeds United to third place and with it, for the very first time, Champions League football.
Gudjohnsen’s outrageous overhead kick – January 2003
A humdinger of a contest ended 3-2 to Chelsea and contained one of the great Stamford Bridge goals, Eidur Gudjohnsen’s spectacular bicycle kick from Frank Lampard’s cross.

A first meeting in eight-and-a-half years was much anticipated and went Chelsea’s way as we thrashed Leeds in a League Cup quarter-final at Elland Road.
Jorginho settles five-goal thriller | December 2021
This was the first league meeting at the Bridge in front of a full house for nearly two decades - with the previous season's contest being played under COVID restrictions - and it was a contest worthy of the occasion, decided in stoppage time by Jorginho’s second penalty of the match.
