Magnificent Zola | January 2001

We begin the shortlist with a simply magnificent entry from the magical Gianfranco Zola. After Newcastle had taken the lead, the Italian received the ball on the edge of the area and unleashed a whipped effort that nestled in the top right-hand corner – one of his best in blue, and he has some catalogue to choose from!

Zola’s goal inspired our fightback as we ended the game 3-1 victors after Gus Poyet and Jesper Gronkjær made it two and three respectively.

Blues fire five past Toon | November 2003

Chelsea produced a scintillating performance at Stamford Bridge early in the 2003/04 campaign, blowing Bobby Robson’s Magpies away.

Glen Johnson, Hernan Crespo and Frank Lampard all found the net in the first half before Damien Duff scored the goal of the game with a jinking solo effort. Eidur Gudjohnsen’s header rounded off a five-star performance from the Blues.

Kezman’s Panenka | December 2004

He had to wait a while but Mateja Kezman finally scored his first Premier League goal for the club in a 4-0 rout of Newcastle during our 2004/05 title-winning campaign.

The Blues were awarded a spot-kick at 3-0 and with the whole of Stamford Bridge willing him to score, Kezman was the coolest man in town, cheekily chipping a Panenka into the net. You wouldn’t have known he had suffered such misfortune in front of goal!

Torres’ trivella | August 2012

For our next entry, we bring you another outstanding piece of solo skill, this time from Fernando Torres. After Hazard had put the Blues in front from the penalty spot, the Belgian played provider for our second goal, backheeling the ball into the path of Torres, who struck it sweetly with the outside of his right boot.

His effort arrowed into the top right-hand corner, flying past Tim Krul and nestling into the net, before Fernando wheeled away to celebrate with the Shed End.

Hazard’s hat-trick | February 2014

Hazard may have only scored three career hat-tricks – two of those coming at Chelsea – but when he did, there were always moments of magic. His performance at home to Newcastle back in 2014 was no different.

The first was a pinpoint finish after exchanging passes with Branislav Ivanovic, the second followed a neat one-two with Samuel Eto’o, and the third came from the penalty spot in front of a jubilant Matthew Harding Lower.

Palmer’s precision | October 2024

Cole Palmer played possibly the pass of the Premier League season in the most recent meeting between the sides at Stamford Bridge.

Palmer turned and threaded a ball into Pedro Neto’s path from deep inside his own half. The winger skipped away from a challenge before squaring for Nicolas Jackson to convert and give the move the finish it merited.
