The Blues take on the Whites tonight at Stamford Bridge, and ahead of that third-round tie, we have delved into the archives and dug up a classic victory over our old rivals.

The setting was Elland Road and the date was 19 December 2012. The Blues had only just returned from the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan, but there were no signs of jet lag as we routed the then-Championship side by a record margin.

However, it was our hosts who struck first in the 37th minute on a wet and windy evening in Yorkshire. David Luiz was caught out of position, allowing Jerome Thomas to break down the left and cross for Luciano Becchio, who finished past Petr Cech to give Neil Warnock’s side a 1–0 lead at the break.

The Blues hit back immediately after the restart when Juan Mata levelled the score with a low, placed shot from the edge of the penalty area.

The equaliser shifted the momentum completely as we showed our Premier League class. In the 64th minute, Branislav Ivanovic rose at the near post to head home Frank Lampard’s corner, putting Rafa Benitez’s Blues ahead. Two minutes later, Victor Moses extended the lead with a powerful shot into the top corner.

Substitute Eden Hazard then made an instant impact off the bench, capping off a swift counter-attack, and soon afterwards Fernando Torres completed the rout by tapping in from close range.
