Welbeck marked his Chelsea debut against Luton with a goal as the Blues reached the third round of the League Cup courtesy of our 2-0 victory at Stamford Bridge.

The 35-year-old’s career has seen him represent England 42 times, win the title at Manchester United and lift the FA Cup twice during his time at Arsenal. He has played with some of the Premier League’s greatest ever players over the years but still appreciates being able to share a pitch with the likes of Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers and Estevao Willian.

'It's such a privilege to play with some of these players and it's a joy when you're out there on the pitch,’ he said.

‘For me, playing as a nine today, it was more about staying on the last line. When the ball came into me, I was always ready to link up with the likes of Morgan and Cole. I really enjoyed that and I'm looking forward to it happening a lot more.'

This summer has seen the Blues sign experienced players like Welbeck, Jordan Henderson and Maxence Lacroix, while continuing to add exciting talents such as Valentin Barco, Geovany Quenda and Marco Palestra to our squad.

With world-class operators like Moises Caicedo, Reece James and Palmer already among our ranks, plus the addition of a title-winning manager in Xabi Alonso, Welbeck believes the Blues could have a season to remember.

'We can build something special here,’ he said.

'With the quality of players we have here, it's only right that we believe we can achieve something special. We'll keep pushing and working every single day, and we'll be trying to get those results at the weekends.'

Welbeck signed for the Blues on August 1 from Brighton and Hove Albion, and started two games during our pre-season tour, before injury ruled him out of our season opener against Fulham on Monday night.

He returned on Thursday night to make his competitive debut and had an immediate impact, linking up well with the likes of Estevao, Palmer and Rogers as the Blues laid siege to Luton’s goal.

It was the striker who finally broke the deadlock early in the second half when he headed in Malo Gusto’s superb first-time cross.

Welbeck said: 'It's really nice to get a goal on your debut and to get off the mark right from the start. So I am really pleased with that.

'More importantly, I'm pleased to get through to the next round and we've got to stand strong in every single competition this season.'

The Blues had 26 shots on the night but had to remain patient as they searched for the opener, with Welbeck concluding: 'I think patience was really important. It's never easy against a low block, so you have to keep circulating the ball, moving it from side to side and looking for openings.

'In the first half, there were a few opportunities where we could maybe have got the first goal, but it didn't quite come. At half-time, the message was to get the ball into the box a bit earlier and put some crosses in.

'It was a good message and it worked well. Malo put in a quality delivery and I was there to nod it in.'

Blues fans will be hoping this was the first of many for Danny this season.
