As we approach a mouth-watering derby on Sunday, we take a look back at where the Chelsea team that beat Arsenal back in 2017 are now, a side that would ultimately go on to lift the Premier League title that season.

Marcos Alonso headed Antonio Conte’s side in front in the first half and our lead was doubled shortly after the interval through Eden Hazard, who produced a moment of sheer genius to dribble past three Arsenal players before beating his former team-mate Petr Cech.

Cesc Fabregas then netted against his former club and though future Blue Olivier Giroud bagged a consolation, the 3-1 victory was another major step taken on our path to the title.

As we discovered, several of that team are still playing nearly nine years on, while others have hung their boots up…

Antonio Conte - head coach

The man who steered us to our fifth Premier League title is now in charge of Napoli, who we meet in the Champions League in January. Conte won Serie A with them last season.

Thibaut Courtois - goalkeeper

The goalkeeper moved to Real Madrid in 2018 and has been a regular ever since, notably playing a key part in their Champions League successes in 2022 and 2024.

Cesar Azpilicueta - centre-back

Azpi brought his glittering Blues career to an end in 2023 and after two seasons with Atletico Madrid, the defender joined Sevilla in the summer.

David Luiz - centre-back

David Luiz signed for Cypriot side Pafos from Fortaleza in his native Brazil in the summer, and earlier this week became the Champions League’s second oldest goalscorer - at 38 years and 218 days old – in their 2-2 draw with Monaco. We can expect to see him back at the Bridge when we host Pafos in January!

Gary Cahill - centre-back

Cahill retired in 2022 after spells with Crystal Palace and Bournemouth at the end of his career. The former defender is now a Chelsea ambassador.

Victor Moses - right wing-back

A dynamic right wing-back in Conte’s 3-4-3 system, Moses moved to Spartak Moscow on a permanent deal in 2021. He spent last season at Luton Town in the Championship and has been without a club since.

N’Golo Kante - central midfielder

Still a France international at 34, Kante has spent the past two years since departing Stamford Bridge with Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia.

Nemanja Matic - central midfielder

Matic left Chelsea at the end of the 2016/17 season to sign for Manchester United. Five years at Old Trafford was followed by spells with Roma, Rennes and Lyon before he joined Serie A side Sassuolo in August, shortly after his 37th birthday.

Marcos Alonso - left wing-back

Alonso bravely opened the scoring in what was the first of six seasons he spent at the Bridge. After joining Barcelona in 2022, the left-sided player has been at Celta Vigo for the past 18 months.

Pedro - right winger

Pedro is still going strong at 38, playing for Lazio in Italy after initially spending a season with their city rivals Roma upon leaving Chelsea in 2020.

Diego Costa - striker

The former Spain international last played for Gremio in Brazil in 2024, but has been back at the Bridge since then, turning out for Chelsea Legends in our game against Liverpool in October.

Eden Hazard - left winger

Hazard also featured in that game having called time on his playing career in October 2023, injuries having hampered the final few years of his career at Real Madrid.

Used substitutes

Kurt Zouma - centre-back

The big French defender, now 31, was a West Ham player for four years after leaving Chelsea in 2021. This summer he joined Romanian side Cluj on a two-year deal.

Cesc Fabregas - central midfielder

Fabregas went straight into coaching upon his retirement from the game in 2023, becoming Como’s head coach in August last year. He guided them to an impressive tenth-placed finish in Serie A in his first season in charge.

Willian - winger

After a season at Arsenal and then Corinthians in his homeland, the fans' favourite had successful spells down the road at Fulham in recent years, either side of a stint at Olympiacos, before returning to his homeland in September – shortly after turning in 37 – to sign for Gremio.
