You voted Estevao Willian as your Player of the Match in our Champions League game away at Qarabag and it’s not hard to see why, after the winger posted some impressive statistics across the board.
We may have made the long trip home from Baku with just the solitary point to show for the journey, following a determined effort by a buoyant Qarabag side – continuing what is already comfortably the best-ever Champions League campaign by a side from Azerbaijan – but by almost any metric Estevao’s individual performance shone.
That was reflected in him taking 78 per cent of the votes from users on the Chelsea Official App to be named our Player of the Match from the 2-2 draw in Baku, and we can see why. Right from the start, when he opened the scoring, our No.41 impressed.
The Blues fielded three Brazilian players in our starting XI for a Champions League game for the first time since 2015, when Ramires, Oscar and Willian lined up against Porto. On this occasion, it was Estevao, Andrey Santos and Joao Pedro.
It didn’t take long for the Brazilian connection to make its presence felt, as the trio combined for Estevao’s opening goal after just 16 minutes. Joao Pedro played a clever pass around the corner, Santos drove into the space and teed up Estevao, who quickly shifted onto his left and drilled a low shot past the keeper at his near post.
It was brilliant and incisive, quickly upping the tempo to strike after a patient build-up. It also showed how quickly the teenager is finding his feet at Chelsea since his summer move from Palmeiras. He now has four goals in his last seven appearances for the Blues and is our top scorer in this season’s Champions League.
His previous European goal, in the 5-1 win over Ajax at Stamford Bridge, made him Chelsea’s youngest-ever scorer in this competition. Now, at 18 years and 195 days, he is also the third-youngest from any club to find the net on his first two Champions League starts – only behind Ethan Nwaneri and Kylian Mbappe.
Estevao provided arguably our biggest threat to Qarabag throughout Wednesday’s game. No player on the pitch had more than his three shots, and only our other goalscorer Alejandro Garnacho managed more on target.
That’s not to say the young Brazilian was selfish, as he also did plenty to provide opportunities for his team-mates. His four crosses were second only to Reece James, the full-back overlapping around him, as our right flank proved a promising route for attacks.
James and Enzo Fernandez were also the only Chelsea players to complete more passes in the final third, while Estevao stands alone at the top of the chart for chances created, with three. Nobody else on either team created more than one.
All his usual skill and trickery was also on show in Baku. His seven dribbles were unmatched and three completed dribbles the joint-highest on the pitch.
If that wasn’t enough, Estevao’s willingness to do the defensive work and get stuck in to win possession back himself was also clear once again against Qarabag. His four tackles attempted was the most for Chelsea, and only Tosin Adarabioyo was successful in his challenges more times. Not bad for a winger!
Well done, Estevao!
