Moises Caicedo only arrived back in England from Ecuador late on Thursday evening, but the midfielder did not let the travel affect him as he put in a Player of the Match performance against Brentford 48 hours later.
Caicedo has been a model of consistency under Enzo Maresca, and he maintained his high standards in what turned out to be an exciting 2-2 draw with Brentford on Saturday. Blues fans picked Caicedo as their star performer in our vote on the Chelsea Official App.
Maresca deployed the Ecuadorian is his customary central midfield role alongside Enzo Fernandez. As the average position map below shows, Caicedo (no.25) truly operated in the middle of the park, with his fellow South American to his right.
It was a night when Caicedo showed both sides to his game. Against a combative Brentford outfit, he won possession back eight times. That was a joint-high Chelsea figure, and the highest of any outfielder on the pitch.
Caicedo was also successful with two tackles and one aerial duel, while he won two fouls as the Bees tried to stop him. It is no surprise opposition teams target Caicedo, such is his importance to the side.
That is shown by the work he did in possession. Caicedo completed an impressive 62 of the 64 passes he attempted, equating to an accuracy percentage of 96.9 per cent.
Almost a quarter of those passes – 14 - were played in the final third. That was the second highest number of anyone on the pitch (Pedro Neto completed 15), and underlines how Caicedo is tasked with starting attacks by moving the ball quickly onto the more attacking players ahead of him.
That is not to say the 23-year-old cannot be decisive in front of goal. He certainly can! Caicedo may not have scored many in Chelsea blue but when he does they are usually of the spectacular variety, and his 85th-minute strike that put us ahead was a prime example.
With plenty of players from both teams inside the box, Caicedo had time and space when collecting a half-cleared Alejandro Garnacho cross 25 yards out. He didn’t rush his shot, taking his time to line the ball up and then picking his spot with aplomb. His rising drive was perfectly placed to avoid the gaggle of bodies between him and the goal, and find the top corner. Caoimhin Kelleher had no chance.
It was Caicedo’s fourth shot of the Premier League season and his second goal. That has matched his tally for the entirety of last season. He now has five goals and ten assists in 102 Chelsea appearances.
Despite the quick turnaround between playing for Ecuador in midweek and representing Chelsea in this west London derby, Caicedo was clearly the game’s outstanding player and Maresca saw no need to take him off. He is the only Chelsea outfielder to have played every minute of every game so far this season, and with performances such as these, you can see why.
