Wieke Kaptein believes Chelsea need to work hard to make our chances count following Sunday’s frustrating draw away at Liverpool in the Women’s Super League.
The Blues took an early lead in St Helens thanks to a stunning opening goal by Alyssa Thompson – her second in as many WSL games – but were pegged back and couldn’t find a way to restore our advantage.
Aggie Beever-Jones went closest, with one effort bouncing narrowly wide late on, after putting the ball into the back of the net only to see it ruled out for offside, while Erin Cuthbert and Catarina Macario weren’t far away from scoring a Chelsea second either.
Following that 1-1 draw, which allowed Manchester City to introduce a three-point gap at the top of the table, Kaptein underlined the need to convert our dominance and chances into goals.
‘I think we had a lot of possession in the game but we need to make the chances count,’ she insisted. ‘I think we had a lot of chances and we need to be clinical in front of the goal.
‘We need to stick together in this kind of situation. We had the whole second half and 20 minutes in the first half to make it 2-1 and I think we had a lot of chances.
‘Of course, we need to stick together in these kind of games, and just play our own game I think.’
The Blues don’t have time to dwell on that draw, though. Fast approaching is a massive game at Stamford Bridge in the UEFA Women’s Champions League, and a tough challenge for Kaptein and her team-mates.
On Thursday evening we host Barcelona, the side which have knocked us out of that competition in the semi-finals two years running, including a pair of 4-1 defeats home and away in 2024/25.
Kaptein knows we will need to be at our best to set the record straight and extend our winning run in that competition to three in a row.
‘It’s going to be a really important game,’ continued the Dutch midfielder. ‘We lost of course to them two times last year, so we’re really fired up.
‘So I think if we stick together – we need the whole team – we have a chance, and we need all the fans there. So we can’t wait for that.
‘Of course now it’s not good, how we performed against Liverpool, but I think we need to switch on really quick, because in three days we face Barcelona.’
