Wieke Kaptein was one of the five Chelsea players to score in last night’s 6-0 thrashing of Roma at Stamford Bridge, and the fact the goals were shared around gave our young Dutch star extra cause for delight.

An own goal put Sonia Bompastor’s Blues ahead against Roma before Kaptein doubled our lead with a close-range finish. The floodgates opened and by the end we were worthy 6-0 winners.

The goals were most welcome after several games in which we have found them hard to come by, leaving Kaptein pleased with her own efforts, and that of the team’s.

‘It was a really good game from everyone,’ she said.

‘Everyone who came in was really good so it didn’t change a lot. We had a really good team performance with a lot of different goalscorers. I’m also really happy to get on the scoresheet.

‘I’m playing in the ten role so I’m trying to get more assists and goals this season, and of course I have a really good team around me to help me get goals and assists.’

The outcome, our second 6-0 victory in this season’s Champions League, leaves us in third place in the league phase table heading into the sixth and final matchday.

Next Wednesday we travel to Germany to take on Wolfsburg – four places and two points behind us – with everything on the line. A top-four finish is required to advance straight to the quarter-finals as a seeded team, with the sides fifth to 12th going into a play-off round.

‘I really like this format,’ Kaptein said.

‘We play different clubs every time which I think is really good, and it levels up the quality in the Champions League which is really good.

‘It’s going to be a difficult game [against Wolfsburg] but of course we want to get into the top four. We’re really ready and we’re looking forward to it.’
