Kingsmeadow will soon become home to Chelsea midfielder Wieke Kaptein. Against an opponent she is more than familiar with, she is hoping to play on our home turf in front of Blues fans for the first time.
Chelsea return to Kingsmeadow on Saturday for our first home pre-season match when we host Dutch side Feyenoord on Saturday (12pm kick-off).
Our return to Kingston also marks the first match where new head coach Sonia Bompastor will lead her team out in front of a home crowd.
It will also be a maiden opportunity for teen Kaptein – who hails from the Netherlands - to play in front of our dedicated Kingsmeadow crowd.
The 19-year-old already has two games for Chelsea under her belt, having started both of our wins against NJ/NY Gotham and Arsenal during our pre-season tour of the USA.
‘I think I’m going to really love playing at Kingsmeadow,’ Kaptein said. ‘I’m really curious to see what it is like playing there and I'm also really excited.
‘I think I will have goosebumps when I play in front of the fans at home for the first time. I know I will really enjoy it and there will be a lot of smiling. I’m excited to be out there on the field with the team.’
The fans, Kaptein says, play a vital role throughout the entire season in helping the team perform on the pitch. She wants to build that connection with the Blues supporters from the get go.
‘You need the fans around you to cheer you on and to keep you fighting for 90 minutes,’ Kaptein added. ‘They’re an important part of our team.
‘I want to show them what I can do for the team and how I will always do what I can to help the team – whether that is from the start or coming off the bench. My goal is to always help the team.
‘Sonia wants us to play football and not long balls, and I like that. I’m a midfielder and want to get on the ball and help the team by playing good passes and maybe scoring goals.'
Kaptein will make her Kingsmeadow debut against a team who she is very familiar with after coming up against Feyenoord during her time playing in the Netherlands.
The midfielder came through the ranks at FC Twente – which is where she joined the Blues from last summer – and spent last season back on loan at the club where she made her senior debut at only 15.
‘Feyenoord are a really fighting team and will fight for the ball for the 90 minutes,’ Kaptein added about Saturday’s opponents. ‘They are a good team to come up against in pre-season.
‘We will be more on the ball and there might be less defending [from the other games we’ve played], but they are a good team. We just want to show what we can do.'
