When Chelsea signed 18-year-old Wieke Kaptein from her hometown club FC Twente in 2023, it was decided that she would be loaned straight back to them to continue her development in familiar surroundings.
Kaptein’s return to the Blues coincided with the appointment of Sonia Bompastor as head coach, and the teenager immediately staked her claim in the first team. Making 33 appearances in all competitions in her first season at Chelsea, the Netherlands international weighed in with four goals and four assists during our domestic Treble-winning campaign.
It was in that maiden year in Blue that Kaptein came full circle, as we drew her former club FC Twente in the group stage of the Women’s Champions League. That meant we played the Dutch side home and away, racking up a 9-2 aggregate scoreline across the two fixtures.
This season the UWCL has left the old format behind in favour of the new league phase but we will still line up against FC Twente once more.
This season sees us face six different teams – three at home and three away – in the initial part of the competition, and it was to the Blues youngster’s disbelief that we once again drew her former side.
‘To be honest, I didn't see that one coming!’ smiled Kaptein. ‘I thought it was a one-time thing, but no, it's really good, and I think they have a good group to play against. We're really excited.
‘It was good to play in my home stadium last season, where it all began. I enjoyed the reaction from the fans. I was really grateful to them. It was a good game from our side, and I hope it's going to be the same again.
‘I really like the new format. It’s good that it's not the same team every time, I think it's more varied, and it's good for every team that you play different matches in different countries against different playing styles.’
Kaptein has already scored twice in our first five matches of the season, leaving her halfway towards last year’s tally of four already.
Now 20 years old, she feels like she has evolved as a player since the last time we faced FC Twente, and the team has developed in that time, too.
‘Last time we played them, it was our first year with Sonia, and this is now her second year,’ explained Kaptein. ‘As a team, I think we've grown to know each other much more now.
‘I just try to help the team as much as possible, and try to contribute with as many goals and assists if I'm playing higher up the field.’
Having played in both the Vrouwen Eredivisie and the Women’s Super League, Kaptein explained the differences between the two divisions.
While she wishes FC Twente well in general, she is also determined to kick off our Champions League campaign with a win and thinks she knows how we can beat her former side.
‘I think here in the WSL it's a lot more physical,’ says Kaptein. ‘It’s good football and everything they have in Holland, but the most different thing is that every team in this league is so good, you need to be ready for every game.
‘We need to play our own game on Wednesday, to play good football and try to score as quickly as possible to hurt them. I hope they will do well, but when we play them, I hope we will win.
‘It’s really important to start with a win at the beginning of the competition. I think we want to win every game. We’ve never won the Champions League, so it’s a goal for every one of us.’
