The transfer window will soon be open once again for winter 2026. Here is all the information you need about the window and deadlines in England and the rest of the world...
When does the transfer window open and close?
The month-long mid-season transfer window offers clubs an opportunity to freshen up their squads for the second half of the campaign, with permanent transfers, outgoing loans and returning loan players able to move and be registered for the duration of the window.
For Premier League clubs, the winter transfer window begins on Thursday 1 January. There is also a little extra time to complete deals due to the month ending on a weekend, with the Premier League transfer deadline set for 7pm UK time on Monday 2 February as a result.
When is the Champions League transfer deadline?
Clubs competing in any UEFA competition have until midnight on Thursday 5 February to register their squads for the knockout rounds. Each team can add up to three new players to their squad, but must not exceed the maximum limit of 25 players in their A List senior European squad.
When is the January transfer window for France, Germany, Italy and Spain?
Of the other main European windows, those in Germany and France open on 1 January, the same as the Premier League, but clubs in Italy and Spain must wait an extra day until their windows begin on 2 January. The deadlines in England, France, Germany and Italy are all aligned for 7pm UK time on 2 February, although Spain have an extra four hours to complete their deals, before La Liga closes its window at 11pm UK time.
Which countries can still sign players after that date?
As always, there are a few late deadlines around Europe, where teams will be looking to take advantage of the extra time to complete their transfers. The most familiar is Portugal, where clubs have one more day before their window closes on 3 February.
Other notable late window closures are in Austria, Greece and Turkiye (all 6 February), with Switzerland the last of the well-known European leagues to close, on Monday 16 February.
When is the transfer window for Chelsea Women?
The Women's Super League transfer window runs one day later than the Premier League's this winter, opening on Friday 2 January and closing on Tuesday 3 February.
What happens after the deadline?
If a transfer is agreed between two clubs late in the day, the Premier League grant some additional time for the relevant documentation to be completed and submitted.
A deal sheet can be sent to the authorities to indicate that a transfer agreement has been reached, after which the clubs are handed an additional two hours to complete the remaining paperwork.
Some moves could also be agreed during January to be completed in the summer. Players who are due to be out of contract at the end of the season are permitted to confirm pre-contract agreements with foreign clubs outside of their current team's country from January, allowing them to move at the end of their contract.
What are the Premier League squad list rules?
All Premier League clubs are required to resubmit their updated full Premier League squad list after the transfer window closes on 2 February.
Teams in England are able to make as many changes to their squad list as they want during the January window, with no restrictions to additions outside of the overall limit of a maximum 25 over-21 first-team players, of which a minimum of eight must be homegrown.
The Premier League defines a homegrown player as someone of any nationality who was 21 or older on 1 January 2025 and spent a total of three years registered to an English or Welsh club prior to the end of the season in which he turned 21.
Coaches can supplement the squad with any number of under-21 players (born on or after 1 January 2004) whatever their country of birth.
