It’s been an exciting first week of action in this year’s European Championships with several of our Blues impressing on the international stage.
England 1-0 Austria
The Lionesses got the tournament underway in front of a record crowd at Old Trafford on Wednesday. Millie Bright and Fran Kirby started for England as Sarina Weigman’s team got the win in front of more than 68,000 fans.
Kirby assisted the only goal of the game in the first half, curling in an inch-perfect cross for Beth Mead to head home and get England’s campaign off to a winning start.
Norway 4-1 Northern Ireland
A day later the second Group A game took place at St. Mary’s Stadium. Maren Mjelde captained Norway and Guro Reiten also started as they beat Northern Ireland 4-1 in Southampton.
Reiten was immediately involved in the action and set up Norway’s first, threading a ball through to Julie Blakstad who neatly slotted home the opener.
The Norwegians ran out comfortable winners in the end, Reiten found herself on the scoresheet early on in the second half, bending a free-kick past the wall and into the far corner to add to a big win for the Scandinavian side.
Germany 4-0 Denmark
Group B got underway on Friday evening at the Brentford Community Stadium. Ann-Katrin Berger was an unused substitute for Germany who ran out 4-0 winners against Denmark, captained by Pernille Harder.
Denmark’s training base for the tournament is the Blues’ home at Kingsmeadow, the Danes will be looking to bounce back from defeat as they prepare to face Finland tomorrow evening.
Netherlands 1-1 Sweden
Another Chelsea face-off took place in Sheffield on Saturday. Magdalena Eriksson was in the starting 11 for Sweden, as was Aniek Nouwen for the Netherlands. Nouwen was forced off through injury just before the first half ended.
Eriksson made a goal-saving block late on as both sides shared a point in their opening game.
France 5-1 Italy
New signing Eve Perisset started and played the full 90 minutes as France thrashed Italy in Rotherham yesterday evening. France sit top of Group D and will look to build on that impressive win when they face Belgium on Thursday evening.
