Chelsea Women Under-18s delivered a dominant performance at Cobham on Wednesday in the preliminary round of the Women’s PGA Cup, with Aggie Beever-Jones and Rebekah Pierce both scoring twice.
Beever-Jones and Lola Brown – making her second Under-18 appearance of the season – were named in the starting XI, while summer signing Manaka Matsukubo featured in a Chelsea shirt for the first time since joining from NC Courage. Teams are permitted to field up to three first team players in this competition.
An energetic start from the Blues set the tone, with Leanne Champ’s side establishing control and with it, a commanding five-goal lead before the break. Further goals followed in the second half to cap off a clinical display and secure progression to the first round of the PGA Cup.
Five-star first half
Chelsea opened the scoring after six minutes following a period of sustained pressure. Brown reversed a pass down the line for Jahmya Putman to deliver a first-time cross into Beever-Jones. After controlling, Beever-Jones set up Keira Johnson on the edge of the penalty area, with her first-time finish finding the bottom corner.
The lead was doubled midway through the half when a clearance out of defence found Beever-Jones on the left wing. She linked up with Matsukubo, who returned a weighted pass into the box for Beever-Jones to deftly chip over the oncoming goalkeeper.
Eight minutes later, Pierce (pictured top) intercepted a clearance in midfield to spark a neat combination involving Matsukubo, Beever-Jones and Brown. When Brown's shot was parried back into danger, Pierce reacted quickly to tap into an open net.
Beever-Jones then doubled her tally. After finding Pierce on the right wing, Beever-Jones collected the return pass on the edge of the area. She shifted the ball onto her right foot and struck across goal through a crowd of defenders.
In first-half stoppage time, Sadie Gregory sent Beever-Jones clear down the left channel. Driving past her defender into the penalty area, Beever-Jones picked out Pierce arriving at the six-yard box to finish first time.
Dominance maintained
Chelsea picked up where they left off after the restart. Eight minutes into the second period, captain Belle Sullivan released Beever-Jones on the right flank, and her cross across the face of goal was turned in at the far post by Brown.
West Ham pulled a goal back on 63 minutes. Victoria Rudz produced a fine save to tip a free-kick onto the crossbar, but after the Blues failed to clear, Ruby Warwick’s strike from the edge of the box took two deflections before falling to Lexie de Aguiar, who finished from close range.
Substitute Stevie Sinclair had entered the action at the break, with Aysia Matabaro, Carla Gardiner and Chelsea N’Drin all introduced on the hour mark.
The Blues added a seventh two minutes from time. Matabaro traded passes with Pierce down the left wing, worked her way into the box before drilling a cross across goal for N'Drin to steer home from close range.
What it means…
The win sees Chelsea progress to the first round of the Women's PGA Cup. The Blues will host Ipswich Town on 11 November, having recently earned an 8-0 victory over the same opponent at Kingsmeadow.
