Xabi Alonso is hopeful Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo will be ready to face Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday, and says Levi Colwill and Geovany Quenda are in contention to face the Seagulls.

Our third game of the week comes in the Premier League, as we welcome Fabian Hurzeler's side to Stamford Bridge. It is an opportunity for the Blues to make it three wins from three matches at the start of the campaign.

Our latest victory came on Thursday evening as we defeated Luton Town in the Carabao Cup second round. Alonso selected a strong side, with a Danny Welbeck header and an own goal from Hakeem Odoffin sealing our progression to the third round.

Neither Colwill nor Quenda were involved against the Hatters. Yet Alonso stressed there was no reason for concern, with both players being managed through a busy week.

He explained: ‘There were no issues, and the plan is that they are training [from Friday] and preparing for the game on Sunday.

'With Levi, after his injury last season, he is still in a period where he has to take the right steps, we don’t want to push him too much. We want to make sure [his body] doesn't get stressed and that he feels comfortable and well. It’s the same with Geo as well.’

Caicedo hasn't yet featured for the Blues this season due to what, ahead of our opening fixture, Alonso detailed as a setback suffered in training.

However, the Blues boss is hopeful the Ecuadorian will train ahead of the visit of his former club and be available for selection come Sunday's game.

Alonso said: ‘He is hopefully training [on Friday] and we are hopeful that he can be involved [against Brighton]. But we need to check. No decision has been made.’

One player expected to be in contention to return for the Blues on Sunday is Wesley Fofana, who served the second of his two-match suspension against Luton.

Summer signing Jordan Henderson, meanwhile, may need more time, with Alonso confirming in his pre-match press conference that the Blues are waiting for him to be given the 'green light to play soon' following the injury he sustained during the World Cup.
