Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso emphasised the ‘value’ of this afternoon's 4-3 victory over Brighton and Hove Albion – and provided an update on Moises Caicedo after the midfielder was forced off with an injury in the second half.
For 32 minutes of the contest at Stamford Bridge, the Blues were in full control. We opened the scoring early, with Romeo Lavia converting from close range for his first Chelsea goal, before Pedro Neto and Joao Pedro then found the net.
Brighton reacted, though. They reduced the deficit before the interval through Malick Yalcouye and pulled another goal back when Joao Pedro turned a cross into the Blues’ net.
However, Alonso’s players displayed their resilience to respond and re-establish our advantage, as Cole Palmer curled an excellent shot home from 20 yards. That proved enough to secure all three points, despite a late consolation from Pascal Gross.
Alonso once again highlighted that there are improvements for his side to make in the weeks ahead, but he was pleased the Blues had overcome a difficult opponent to make it two wins from two Premier League fixtures at the start of the campaign.
‘All the wins I enjoy a lot, but it was a game that in different moments had different feelings,' Alonso explained in his post-match press conference.
'In the end, we’re happy with the result. We value this win against a very good opponent who have been tough in the last few years. We are happy with that, and there are things and moments that we have done well, but it’s a process to keep on learning and improving. Usually, that is easier with a win.’
The one negative of the afternoon was Caicedo's injury. The Ecuadorian midfielder missed our opening two fixtures of the season but was introduced from the substitutes' bench midway through the second period.
However, 13 minutes after coming on, Caicedo was forced off and replaced by Valentin Barco, who helped the Blues get over the line.
'He was cautious to stop and say his feeling wasn’t the best,' Alonso replied when asked about the midfielder's injury after the game.
'We need to assess during the week, but it wasn’t something new.’
