The attacking duo didn’t feature in our final friendly, against Real Sociedad, nor our Premier League opener at Craven Cottage earlier in the week, when Welbeck was an unused substitute.

Our manager had positive news on their fitness, but confirmed the game will come too soon for another new signing, Jordan Henderson.

‘Danny and Emma, yes [they will be in contention to face Luton],’ said Alonso.

‘Jordan will take a little bit longer. Let's see. I'm not a doctor and I don't have the data. We need to wait until we know more.'

It is still early days for Alonso at Chelsea, but the early signs in our victory at Craven Cottage were very promising indeed.

Our new manager knows there is plenty of work ahead to mould this Blues team in his image, but he is confident to see consistent progress as the campaign unfolds.

'Most of the teams will get better and better in the weeks ahead and with more games,’ said Alonso. ‘We have some players that have just been back for two weeks, they are in good shape but they will get better.

'There are teams that have been working longer with their manager and so many ideas are already very established. With other projects, in different cases, it takes more time. So there will be a development of many concepts.

'As I said in another press conference, I think that we started our season Monday and the way we will be playing in January will be different. And I think it's going to be better, and the next year will be even better.'
