Goals from Lexi Potter and Melvine Malard helped Chelsea beat Birmingham City 2-0 at Stamford Bridge, taking our tally to seven points from our opening three Women’s Super League fixtures.

The Blues made an impressive start and took the lead after eight minutes. Ellie Carpenter burst into the box and picked out Alyssa Thompson, whose flick was saved by Sophie Baggaley. Potter reacted quickest to fire the rebound high into the net.

We continued to create chances, with Thompson shooting narrowly over and Carpenter twice threatening. Despite registering 14 attempts to Birmingham’s one before the interval, Sonia Bompastor’s side had to settle for a slender advantage at the break.

Thompson went close again after the restart, while Hannah Hampton intervened to deny Wilma Leidhammar an equaliser. Substitute Malard then provided breathing space in the 71st minute, pouncing on hesitation over a backpass to finish from close range.

Malard almost turned provider for fellow substitute Maika Hamano as we looked for a third, before Hampton dealt with a late Birmingham free-kick to protect her clean sheet.
