Denis Zakaria tells his back story and talks about his time at Chelsea so far in the matchday programme for tonight’s Champions League game against Borussia Dortmund.
The Swiss midfielder has impressed when called upon so far this season and recently returned from an injury that interrupted his progress at a key time in the campaign, but he remains confident in the team’s ability to finish strongly this term.
‘I’m a winner, so I want to win every game, and I think Chelsea deserve this,’ he says. ‘It is a big club and Chelsea have to win. I think everyone has to push the team-mate next to him and that’s what I try to do.’
He also discusses his upbringing in Geneva and his ability to play with a freedom from any pressure.
‘Geneva is an amazing place to grow up. You have everything there. It’s a beautiful city, you’re in Switzerland and you have everything to grow up in the best circumstances. That was really amazing for me, for my family. I cannot say that my mum had a lot of money – we lived well, but we didn’t live like kings. I’m really happy about that because from this I learned a lot about life.
‘I was just enjoying to play football, to be with my team-mates and to enjoy life. No pressure, it was only for pleasure. I played football because it was my passion – it still is.’
There is also an update from Chelsea legend Tore Andre Flo, who checks in to tell us about the latest stage of his managerial career, with his home-town club Sogndal.
‘It’s where I started and finished my professional career, so I’m really happy be back here and coaching them,’ he explains. ‘We’re one division outside of the top league in Norway, so the aim is to take them up and get them into the top flight.
‘I enjoyed working at Chelsea for many years, but in the end I just thought that I had to try management. I want to know if it’s in me to succeed at it and if I can do a good job. So, now I’m finding out.’
