Gianfranco Zola described the Legends of Europe game in honour of the late Gianluca Vialli as ‘everything we wanted and more’.
With the sun beaming down on Stamford Bridge, a large crowd were treated to a fantastic display of football as the Chelsea Legends defeated Bayern Munich 4-0, courtesy of goals from Michael Essien, John Terry, Gary Cahill and Tiago, with the game played in memory of Zola’s close friend and former Blues team-mate, Vialli.
‘This game was everything we wanted and more,’ Franco said after the game. ‘Even the weather was incredible, it was even hotter than Sardinia!
‘In fact, I think we have gone beyond that because the participation of the crowd has been amazing and the game and everything, it went amazingly well so I am very pleased.
‘To win the game and to score some good goals as a team, there has been everything in the mix. I am especially pleased for Gianluca’s wife Cathryn and his daughters, I think they had a very good day, as did all of us.’
All proceeds from the Legends of Europe match are going to the Chelsea Foundation - the club’s charitable foundation - and the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity. The charity supports the work of The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, where Gianluca Vialli was treated for cancer prior to his death in January.
