Charlie Wakefield joined the club at the end of his Under-12 year after leaving Brighton & Hove Albion.

After spending his Under-15 season on the sidelines after breaking an ankle, Wakefield returned to make five appearances for the youth team the following campaign. His versatility has seen him deployed as a winger, a ‘number 10’ and a right-back, and he was a regular for Joe Edwards’s Under-18s in his debut year as a scholar. In the UEFA Youth League, Charlie made four substitute appearances and picked up a winner’s medal after victory in the final against Shakhtar Donetsk.

2015/16 saw him involved more frequently in the Youth League, where he made four appearances in total including as a substitute in the final, as our Under-19s won the competition for a second year in a row. He also featured on five occasions in the Youth Cup, helping us to secure another triumph in that competition.

As he moved into the oldest academy age group the following season, injuries restricted his regular involvement but he was still able to contribute with a number of assists from out wide and featured in two of our Checkatrade Trophy group games.

A former England Under-16 international, Wakefield signed a new contract in August 2017, committing himself to the club until the end of the 2018/19 season. At the end of that month he moved on loan to League Two club Stevenage but recurring muscle injuries meant he was unable to appear for the Hertfordshire side.
