Teenage Kicks: Bashir Humphreys
In the final part of our series looking at the upbringing of our Academy youngsters, defender Bashir Humphreys talks us through how he came to love football, his swimming days and playing for England.
His attitude and maturity, both on and off the pitch, saw him involved as an unused substitute for the youth team while still a schoolboy in 2016/17, before an Under-18s debut swiftly arrived on the opening day of the following campaign. A defender who can play anywhere across the back three or either side of the centre-back pairing, Wakely made 16 appearances for Jody Morris's youngsters as they claimed a clean sweep of four trophies in his maiden season as a scholar.
In 2018/19, he continued to play the majority of his football with the youth team but made his Under-19s debut as a substitute in our thumping 10-1 win over Molde. After stepping up to feature for the development squad 18 times in the 2019/20 campaign, Wakely signed a new one-year contract at the club running until June 2021.
At the end of the 2019 winter transfer window, the young defender joined Southern Premier South Division side Basingstoke Town on loan until the end of the season and made over 15 appearances before the end of the season. In October 2017, he signed a first professional contract at the club until the summer of 2020.
