Steps Up: Jacob Maddox
Chelsea Academy youngster Jacob Maddox, who is spending the season at Cheltenham Town, is the latest subject of our feature speaking to our players developing out on loan.
Jacob signed from Bristol City at the end of his Under-14 year. He is an attacking midfield player who can play in the ‘number 10’ position but mainly features slightly deeper and enjoys running forward with the ball at his feet. A player who creates lots of chances, he has represented England up to Under-20 level and made four appearances for our youth team in his last year as a schoolboy, the 2014/15 season.
In his debut season as a scholar, he was a prominent member of the Under-18s squad that won the south section of the league for the second year running. He also featured in every game as we won the FA Youth Cup for the third year running, scoring three goals including a brace as a substitute against AFC Wimbledon. The midfielder picked up a UEFA Youth League winners medal, making eight appearances, and made his Under-21s debut.
2016/17 saw the Bristol-born midfielder split his duties between the youth team and development squad. His performances in central midfield were instrumental in our Treble-winning Under-18 season and he capped off the campaign with a winner's medal at the Under-19 European Championship with England.
Maddox signed a new contract in August 2017, committing himself to the club until the end of the 2020/21 season.
In July 2018, it was announced Maddox would experience his first loan move with a season at League Two Cheltenham Town.
