Lewis Bate signed for Chelsea as an Under-9 having progressed through our development centre programme.

Academy years

A slight but combative midfield player with an eye for a defence-splitting forward pass, Bate played six times for our Under-18s in the 2018/19 season. He has represented England at Under-17 level including at the European Championship finals and progressed to England Under-18s in 2020.

He signed his first professional contract with Chelsea in October 2019 and made his development squad debut against Tottenham in January 2020, after appearing regularly for the Under-19s in the UEFA Youth League campaign, first featuring in the competition against Valencia in September of the previous year. In total, Bate made 28 appearances and scored four goals throughout the 2019/20 season in Academy competitions, captaining the youth team to the FA Youth Cup final and was an unused sub for the first team away at Sheffield United in July 2020.
